How we invest
Evidence over opinion. Discipline over drama.
Our investment philosophy rests on decades of academic research and a simple belief: markets reward patient owners of productive businesses. Our job is to help you capture those returns, in the right structures, without the mistakes that cost most investors dearly.
A systematic approach
Built like a good medical decision
If a specialist recommended surgery, you’d want to know it was backed by peer-reviewed evidence, not a hunch or a headline. Investing deserves the same standard.
Evidence-based means our portfolios are grounded in long-run research across markets and decades, not forecasts about next quarter. Systematic means decisions follow agreed rules, so what we do in a market panic is the same thing we said we’d do when everything was calm.
This thinking draws on the body of research behind modern asset pricing, including the work of Nobel laureate Eugene Fama and Kenneth French, and the approach used by evidence-based managers such as Dimensional Fund Advisors.
Five principles
What we believe about markets
01 / 05
Markets work
Share markets are an emotionless exchange where companies raise capital and millions of buyers and sellers set prices every day. Those prices quickly reflect what is known. Trying to outguess them consistently is a losing game for most professionals, let alone private investors.
02 / 05
Productive enterprise is the engine
When you own shares you own a slice of real businesses: their sales, their profits and the ingenuity of the people who run them. Over the long run, share markets reflect the human capital of a nation.
03 / 05
Earnings grow, and so does wealth
By lifting prices, cutting costs and creating new products, profitable companies have historically tended to grow earnings faster than inflation, and many pay rising dividends from those earnings. That is the return we want you positioned to collect.
04 / 05
Dimensions of expected return
Research identifies persistent sources of higher expected returns: owning shares over cash, smaller companies over larger ones, lower-priced (value) companies over expensive ones, and more profitable companies over less profitable ones. In bonds, term and credit play a similar role. We tilt toward these dimensions deliberately, not by accident.
05 / 05
Diversify broadly, control costs
Concentration is how fortunes are made and lost. Broad diversification across companies, sectors and countries reduces risks you aren’t paid to take. And every dollar of fees and unnecessary tax is a dollar that doesn’t compound for your family.

Why it matters
Behaviour is the biggest risk in the room
The difference between what an investment returns and what an investor actually earns is mostly behaviour: selling after a fall, chasing last year’s winner, sitting in cash waiting for certainty that never arrives.
Ignoring the noise, not overreacting to short-term moves and, above all, never being forced to sell at the wrong time are what make the plan work. That’s why we hold the right level of cash and defensive assets for your spending needs, so the growth assets can be left to do their job.
Markets can always fall further than you expect. A plan that survives that is worth more than a forecast that sounds clever.
What you can expect
Six benefits of investing this way
01 / 06
Less emotion
Rules agreed in advance help you avoid the impulsive decisions that do the most damage.
02 / 06
Consistency
The same approach in good markets and bad, so you always know what we’re doing and why.
03 / 06
Risk you choose
Diversification and asset allocation are set around your goals, your timeframe and your capacity to ride out a fall.
04 / 06
Transparency
Every recommendation comes with clear reasoning, and full visibility of what you own and what it costs.
05 / 06
Backed by research
Decisions rest on long-run evidence, not on the latest market story.
06 / 06
Tax and cost aware
We pay attention to fees, turnover and which structure holds which asset, because what you keep is what counts.
Putting it to work
From philosophy to your portfolio
- Structure first. We decide what belongs in super, a family trust, a company or your own name before we choose a single investment.
- Asset allocation. The mix of growth and defensive assets is set around your goals and spending needs, then documented.
- Implementation. Low-cost, broadly diversified building blocks, with evidence-based managers where they add value, plus our fixed income desk and real assets where they fit.
- Execution matters. Once you approve a change, we implement it promptly through platforms built for it, rather than letting it wait on paperwork.
- Continual analysis. We monitor holdings and asset class exposures against the ranges we’ve agreed with you and review them with you regularly.

Your values
Investing in line with what you believe
Many families want their wealth to reflect their values, whether that means avoiding certain industries or favouring companies with stronger environmental and governance standards. These preferences can sit within the same evidence-based framework, with the same attention to diversification and cost. We’ll tell you plainly where a preference may change the risk or return profile, so the trade-off is your informed choice.
Next step
Is your portfolio built on evidence, or on habit?
Bring us your current holdings. We’ll show you what you actually own, what it costs, how it’s structured, and where it departs from the evidence. No obligation.
